How do you say Prague in different languages

October 21 2008, 6:50 AM

When I was 5 years old, and just started learning english, I've always had trouble pronouncing the word "cup". Since my native language has a completely different way of pronunciation from english, it just didn't register to my little mind that the letter "u" can be pronounced like the letter "a".

Last year I went to Prague its really a beautiful city I have ever seen. I still don't know how to pronounce "prague". I heard in Czech they pronounce it as "Praha". One evening I went to a very famous italian reataurant in Prague and met with an Arabic family they were really nice to me but when they pronounce Prague as Birag which is an (Arabic) Pronounciation of Prague. Initially I didn't understand but after so much concentration I realize that they are saying something about Prague. That was really an embaracing situation for me, then I decided to atleast learn how to pronounce Prague in different languages since I am on vacations and I got to meet with many people from different Countries.

So here is how to pronounce Prague in different languages:

Arabic:    Birag
Dutch, Limburgish: Praag
Danish:  PragGerman:  Prag
Swedish: Prag
Turkish: Prag Welsh:   Prâg
Irish:   Prág
Italian, Latin: Praga
Esperanto: Prago
English, French, Tagalog: Prague (Belarusian, Czech, Estonian, Finnish, Ido, Indonesian, Nauruan, Norwegian, Slovak, Ukrainian, Lithuanian):  Praha
(Latvian): Praga

Atleast now I can pronounce Prague in different languages.
